TWO KILLED BY FIRE; THIRD DIES IN LEAP.

Harriman, Tenn. (AP) -- An 83-year-old woman leaped to her death and at least two other people died early Saturday when the second fire in five hours broke out in a brick apartment house.
The flames, which created a fiery glow visible eight miles away, engulfed the three-story building within minutes after the fire was reported at 5:05 a.m., witnesses said. Residents could be heard screaming and were seen jumping from windows and a second-story balcony.
At least six people were admitted to area hospitals with burns.
Firefighters continued to spray the rubble Saturday afternoon. The cause had not been determined, and investigators planned to study the ruins Monday after they cool.
Authorities did not know how many people were in the 61-year-old, 14-apartment building, but Police Chief Don Day said at least 30 were known to live there. "Even if that count is accurate, there could be others. This was a haven for drunks" in this eastern Tennessee city about 40 miles west of Knoxville, Day said.
Firefighters were called at about 1 a.m. when fire was reported in a basement closet in the building's northwest corner. That fire was contained and the crews left around 2:30, Day said.

At 5:05 the second alarm was received on a fire in the southeast corner of the basement. That fire apparently started in a laundry room, Day said.
Officials say they don't believe the building had any outside fire escapes.
Day said EDITH CLARK, who jumped from the apartment she shared with her son, was dead on arrival at Harriman General Hospital.
Police could not immediately identify the two burn victims, whose bodies were badly charred. One appeared to be a child, police said.
