HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER KILLED, ANOTHER BADLY INJURED.
Sioux City -- (AP) -- One Jefferson, S.D., high school teacher was fatally injured and another was critically hurt Sunday afternoon when a boiler exploded in the basement of the high school there. Jefferson is six miles northwest of Sioux City.
THERON HARMON, 25, history instructor, died in a hospital here, five hours after the blast. He had undergone amputation of his leg, which was mangled by a piece of the exploding boiler and had suffered first and second degree burns on his face, arms and chest.
The other victim, in a dangerous condition, was HENRY HLADKY, 24, athletic coach and mathematics instructor. HLADKY suffered first and second degree burns over his entire body from hot coals that were blown about the room when the boiler exploded. His legs also were lacerated by flying metal.
The explosion occurred after the two teachers had lighted a fire under an auxiliary boiler to get hot water for a shower.
