By United Press

SALTSBURG, June 8.--A fireman was injured and scores of residents were forced from their homes today in a $35,000 fire which for a time threatened destruction of the Saltsburg business district.

When the fire broke out in a downtown garage, homes in the vicinity were evacuated immediately. Many families carried their furniture to the streets.

Only casualty was Fire Chief Clarence Walters. He suffered burns on both arms.

The fire was brought under control early this afternoon through the efforts of fire companies from nine Pennsylvania cities.

The blaze started in the Hart & Hiltz garage, a one-story frame doublehouse next door and a frame dwelling in the rear. The flames leaped the street and destroyed several houses on the other side.

Companies were summoned from Indiana, Saltsburg, Blairsville, Vandergrift, New Alexandria, Delmont, Greensburg, Apollo and Avonmore.
