Wilkes-Barre, PA Fire, Jan 1899

Wilkesbarre, Pa., Jan. 24.--Fire broke out in the Osterhout building at the corner of Public square and East Market street, this morning, and before the flames were controlled the building was in ruins. The first floor of the building was occupied by stores, the second and third by offices and the fourth by the janitor and other lodgers. The firemen had great difficulty in rescuing some of those who were asleep in the building, many being brought down the ladder in their night clothes. A half dozen lawyers, who occupied offices on the second floor, lost their libraries. The stores on the first floor, with all their contents were entirely destroyed.
