Medford, OR (near) Head-On Crash Kills Five, 1956-08-03

HEAD-ON CRASH FATAL TO FIVE.

Medford (UP) - A head-on collision 33 miles east of here killed five people last night. There were no survivors of the crash, which claimed the lives of the four occupants of one car and the driver of the other auto.
State police said the dead were identified as:
CHARLES ELWELL KLAUS, 33, Portland, who was alone in his car;
SAMUEL NORMAN MALLON, 50, Central Point, driver of the other car;
his mother, CARRIE GERTRUDE MALLON, 73;
and MR. and MRS. VERBIE EDWARD GRISE, both of Dairy, Oregon.
State police said that all were killed instantly, with the possible exception of MALLON, who may have lived a short while. The bodies were taken to the Ashland mortuary at Ashland, Oregon.
There were no witnesses to the accident. State police said MALLON was headed west and the KLAUS car was traveling east when they met head-on on a slight curve on Highway 66, known as the Green Springs highway.
The smashup occurred in Jackson County, two miles west of the Klamath County line.
