Hot Lake, OR Hot Lake Sanitorium Fire, May 1934
Nampans See Hotel Burn ---
Dr. and Mrs. M. W. Faylor and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Cox, on route home to Nampa from Spokane, witnessed the fire which Monday noon destroyed the Hot Lake sanitarium near La Grande, Oregon. The Nampans were the first to notice the smoke issuing from the roof, and at first, believed it to be steam rising from the sulphur water lakes. When flames appeared, however, they notified workmen on the grounds, who spread the alarm. Patients in the hospital were taken to the hospital in La Grande.

1934: A Sunday fire destroys the wooden structure of the building; the town under one roof looses half its size. After the fire and the Great Depression, business was never the same.
