Alderson, OK Mine Gas Explosion, Apr 1901

FIVE MEN KILLED.

GAS EXPLOSION IN AN INDIAN TERRITORY COAL MINE.

South McAlester, I. T., April 29 -- An explosion of gas occurred in the mine of the McAlester Coal Company at Alderson this morning by which five men lost their lives, seven were injured and another is reported missing.
Killed:
EMANUEL LAYTON, colored.
WILEY CLARK and brother, colored.
ANDREW PESCOL.
DOMINICO WESOLELY.
The injured:
ED ANDREWS, colored.
PAT WOODS.
PAUL SOTAK.
MOSE GARRETT, colored.
two others, names unknown.
JOE PETROVITCH is missing.
It is believed the explosion was caused by the firing by some of the men of a defective blast left by the regular shot-firers. All the dead were asphyxiated.
