Agra Business Houses Burned

Agra, Okla., Dec. 29 – (Special. – Fire early this morning destroyed four business houses in the heart of the business section of the town, entailing a loss of $25,000 with but little insurance. The blaze began in the grocery store of Albert CRUIKSHANCK and was well under way when discovered. A tank of gasoline in this building was exploded, hurling burning timbers several hundred yards and scattering the fire throughout the entire block. Sparks and bits of burning shingles were blown to the schoolhouse several blocks away, and for a time that structure was endangered, but was saved without damage by hard work.

The town possesses no fire department, and the citizens turned out en masse and labored hard against the spread of the flames. By their efforts four buildings on the block were saved. A high wind was blowing at the time, and when it was seen that the buildings in the immediate path of the flames were doomed, the fire fighters turned their attention to the nearby buildings. By keeping the roofs wet by the aid of buckets, the spread of the fire was checked.
