Walhalla Family Perish in Fire

Langton, May 12 - Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Gunnion and their two infant children, are dead as the result of a fire which destroyed their farm home five miles east of Walhalla early Saturday morning.

The fire is believed to be due to an explosion of kerosene with which Mrs. Gunnison*(sic) was lighting a fire in the kitchen stove, altho there are no living witness to the tragedy.

The two children, aged two years and five months, respectively, were sleeping at the time of the explosion and were consumed in the blaze which gutted the house. Mr. and Mrs. Gunnion were fatally burned, Mrs. Gunnion dying shortly afternoon and her husband early Saturday evening.

The tragedy occurred about five o'clock Saturday morning. Attention of the neighbors was attracted by flames bursting from the Gunnion farmhouse and they hastened to the scene.

They found Mrs. Gunnion frightfully burned lying on the ground a short distance from the rear of the house. Her husband lay a short distance away near the barn, his clothing was still in flames. The house was a mass of flames from which it was impossible to rescue the two children.

Mr. and Mrs. Gunnion were rushed to Walhalla and given surgical attention. It was plain, however, that their condition was hopeless. Mrs. Gunnion died shortly after 12 o'clock. Her husband lingered until after 6 o'clock and then he, too passed away.

While details of the tragedy are lacking it is thought that Mrs. Gunnion was pouring kerosene into the stove to make the kindling ignite more readily when the explosion occurred.

Mr. Gunnion is supposed to have been at the barn at the time but rushed into the house to rescue his wife. He brought her out, but both were fatally burned.

*While Gunnion was the spelling used, Mrs. Gunnison, was used in the 2nd paragraph. All spellings are included as written.
