Jamestown, ND boating accident, May 1900

NEARLY DROWNED.

SAILBOAT CAPSIZES ON SPIRITWOOD LAKE, AND A NEARLY FATAL ACCIDENT RESULTS.

Jamestown, May 29. - The sail boat at the lake suddenly capsized yesterday when occupied by a party of eight but owing to the presence of mind of the gentlemen of the party what might have been a horrible accident was averted. Harry Flint, Louis Niemeyer, Mrs. Loomis and two children were among those in the party. The boat was in the middle of the lake when quick as a flash it went over in a strong gust with some of the occupants under the big sail. Mrs. Loomis and the children were rescued and placed with firm hold on the boat and fishing boats near by took off Mrs. Loomis and the others afterward. It was a very narrow escape for all and great credit is due the gentlemen of the party. Fortunately there has never been a fatal accident on the lake.
