Morganton, NC Bus And Truck Collide, May 1943
CHILD KILLED IN BUS-TRUCK SMASH.
Morganton, N.C., May 16. -- (AP) -- A child was killed and 14 injured in the collision of a passenger bus and a trailer truck near here today. The child, about 8, was identified as a daughter of MR. and MRS. J. B. HOLT of Clover, S.C.
Sheriff R. C. Chapman said the bus was a Queen City Trailways driven by JAMES ALBERT RADER of Marton and that the truck was driven by DAVID L. LEATHERMAN, 24, of Hickory. He said also that an automobile driven by ROBERT RAMSEY of Drexel was sideswiped as the bus and truck crashed.
The accident occurred near Hunting Creek bridge on highway No. 70, one mile east of Morganton.
The injured, all passengers on the bus, were taken to hospitals.
They were identified as:
MRS. J. B. HOLT, mother of the dead child.
MRS. W. B. HOLT, of Granite Falls, her grandmother, both with broken legs.
MRS. W. P. PAGE, of Hickory, broken leg.
MR. RADER, both legs broken.
SAM SCOTT and EDWARD BECKWITH, soldiers from Camp MacKall.
MISS ROSE COFFEY of Lenoir, bruises and lacerations.
Four others including LEATHERMAN, were given first air treatment and dismissed.
