Charlotte, NC Plane Crash, Oct 1942

Three Dallas Ferry Pilots Die in Crackup

Three pilots of the Army Ferrying Command flying out of Love Field were killed late Friday when their plane crashed in a forest near Morris Field at Charlotte, N.C., Associated Press dispatches said.

Joe J. Cannon Jr., president of the Cannon Aircraft Corporation of Charlotte and a member of the wealthy Concord (N.C.) textile family, was piloting the plane. The other victims were Lieut. Jenkins M. Robertson of Charlotte and J. R. Ibing.

The plane crashed as it was coming for a landing at Morris Field.

Cannon was a brother of Anne Cannon, divorced wife of the late Zachary Smith Reynolds, tobacco heir, and son of the late textile magnate of North Carolina.

The three pilots were not believed to have been stationed here very long. No official information was available on them.
