Belmont, NC Bus And Auto Collide, Sep 1938

FIVE KILLED, 28 INJURED AS BUS AND AUTO CRASH.

Charlotte, N.C., Sept. 4. -- (AP) -- Five dead and 28 injured, several seriously, was the toll counted today in a midnight collision of a super-transport Greyhound bus and a light sedan between Charlotte and Gastonia.
The crowded bus, enroute from New Orleans to New York, and the car crashed near the Catawba River bridge shortly before midnight last night in a murky, drizzling rain, and the big bus careened down a 25-foot embankment.
The dead, all of Charlotte, were the occupants of the sedan, which was a twisted, unrecognizable mass of wreckage. Some of the 37 bus passengers were able to climb out of the overturned bus and to aid others to get out.
The dead:
HOWARD RHODES, 30.
MRS. RHODES, his wife.
BILLY, their 5-year-old son.
HALL M. AUSTIN.
MRS. AUSTIN, his wife.
