Buffalo Harbor, NY Propeller GOV. CUSHMAN Wreck, May 1868

TERRIBLE CATASTROPHE.

EXPLOSION ON THE PROPELLER GOV. CUSHMAN -- FIVE PERSONS KILLED AND SIX MISSING -- THE MISSING SUPPOSED TO BE KILLED -- THE VESSEL A COMPLETE WRECK

[From the Buffalo Courier, Friday]
A most deplorable catastrophe took place in Buffalo Harbor this morning, by which five persons are known to have lost their lives; and six others, who are missing, are in all probability killed. The accident occurred on board the propeller Gov. Cushman, in the creek, abreast of the Sturges Elevator, opposite the foot of Washington Street, at half past two o'clock this morning.
The Gov. Cushman arrived in this port on Tuesday last, with a cargo including 21,000 bushels of wheat, consigned to Port Colborne, Canada. In consequence of the unfavorable wind at the time, the vessel did not stop at Port Colborne on the way down, but came here, discharged the other portion of the cargo, and was about to leave for the above mentioned place when the explosion occurred.
The propeller had backed down from the New York Central dock, and was just "winding" around to start out of the harbor.
The following is a list of the officers and crew, who were on board at the time:

First Mate D. MORRISON, Milwaukee.
