Cloudcroft, NM Private Plane Crashes, Feb 1948

TWO FOUND DEAD IN WRECK OF PLANE.

Cloudcroft, N.M. (AP) -- State Republican Chairman GERALD D. CHAMPION and his brother-in-law, H. M. DENNEY, were found dead in the wreckage of their light plane, ending a five day search.
Searchers plowing through waist-deep snow reached the badly smashed plane shortly before noon.
It had crashed at the head of Willie White Canyon, atop a 9,000-foot peak in the Sacramento Mountains of Southern New Mexico. The bodies were close by.
The two men disappeared on a flight from Carlsbad late last Tuesday, en route back to CHAMPION'S home in Tularosa, about 20 miles northwest of here. DENNEY lived in nearby Alamogordo. Both were 45 years old.
