The toll of Wednesday's explosion now stood at 42 known dead, six of them still unidentified, and 74 seriously injured. It was believed that several more bodies were in the ruins. Debris was piled several feet deep around craters in the ground caused by the series of blasts. At the site of the solvents recovery building where the original explosion occurred, there was crater eight feet deep. The destroyed section of the plant was working on a $2,000,000 smokeless powder order under the national defense program.
