Washington, NJ Jail Fire, Mar 1913

Jersey Police Chief Has No Other Prison Since Jail Burned.

Washington, N. J., March 28---Since the jail burned down the other night and the fire-fighting apparatus was barely saved. Washington has been without a jail and Marshal Shrope has instructed his men not to arrest any more people than they have to.

But last night Shrope came across an intoxicated man who was in no condition to be at large. Shrope walked him up and down two hours, but the jag was too deep rooted, so the marshal took the prisoner into his own front parlor and tied him to a chair. The man was taken to the county jail in the morning.

A temporary caliboose will soon be finished.
