Explosion and Loss of Life.

PORTSMOUTH, N. H., Nov. 16.---Yesterday a workman named John David, employed on Star Island at the [illegible], where improvements are going on, attempted to remove the manholdplate from a large gas-meter for the purpose of making repairs, when a terrific explosion took place, carrying David high in the air. In his descent he was struck in the stomach by a heavy iron truss, receiving fatal injuries. The roof of the building was blown off, and such other damage incurred as to about ruin the structure.
