St. Louis, MO Auto Collision Kills Eight, Jul 1959

NINE DIE ON STATE ROADS ON WEEKEND.

Missouri Highway accidents took 10 lives over the weekend, eight of the deaths occurring in one crash near St. Louis Saturday night.
It was the areas worst auto crash in memory and killed five members of a St. Louis family and three members of a family from Rockford, Ill. Two others in the Illinois car were injured.
The dead:
WILLIAM E. ARNOLD, 67, of St. Louis, driver of one car;
his wife, BESSIE;
their daughter, MRS. VELMA P. WEBSTER, 37;
MRS. WEBSTER'S husband, WAYNE, 46;
and a son by a previous marriage, 4-year-old ROGER HAUS.
The other driver, THOMAS BILLIPS, of Rockford;
his son, MICHAEL, 3;
and daughter, DEBORAH, 5 months.
The injured included BILLIPS' wife, BARBARA, who was critically hurt, and another son, THOMAS, JR., aged 6, who was seriously injured.
The highway patrol said the ARNOLD car apparently went out of control and after running off the shoulder, came back on, crossed the highway and met the BILLIPS car head-on.
