Clarks Grove, MN Head On Auto Crash, Jun 1957
SPEEDING CAR HITS ANOTHER KILLING FIVE.
CRASH OCCURS ON MINNESOTA HIGHWAY; ONLY ONE PERSON SURVIVES TRAGEDY.
Clarks Grove, Minn. (UP) - Five persons were killed and another injured Friday night when a speeding car went out of control on a wide curve near here and swerved head-on into another auto with "a crash that sounded like an explosion."
The accident - the worst in Minnesota this year - occurred on U.S. 63, two miles north of here.
The victims were:
WALDO R. SCHULTZ, 41, Minneapolis, Minn.;
MARILYN ANN TORGESON, 22, Mason City, Iowa;
her grandmother, MRS. MABEL LARSON, 44, Forest City, Iowa;
and MR. and MRS. RALPH BERARD, both 58, of Des Moines, Iowa.
KENNETH CHAPMAN, 33, Des Moines, Iowa, was taken to nearby Albert Lea Hospital in fair condition.
MRS. WALTER CARLSON had slowed down to make a turn into her driveway when a car raced past her at a "terrific rate of speed." She said the car went out of control, into the wrong lane of traffic, and hurtled into the BERARD machine.
The SCHULTZ car was traveling "about 100 miles an hour," a witness told Freehorn County Sheriff Carl C. Lindahal.
It was the second highway crash within 24 hours to claim five lives. Thursday night, five teenage boys died when their late-model hardtop smashed into a tree near McKeesport, Pa.
