Bay City, MI Business Fire, Jan 1897

MAN SMOTHERED TO DEATH.

Bay City, Mich., Jan. 28. -- The Van Emster block, a frame building two stories high, at the head of Washington Avenue, was gutted by fire shortly before four o'clock. THEODORE DURING, aged 58 years, unmarried, who occupied one of the rooms on the second floor, was smothered. FLORENTINE J. VAN EMSTER
the pioneer druggist of the city and a member of the first state pharmacy board, was terribly burned about the head and will die. MRS. VAN EMSTER and four young daughters and her mother and a sister were rescued by passers-by.
The property loss is small.
