Auburn, MA Tractor Trailer And Auto Crash, Jun 1996
CRASH KILLS 5 MEMBERS OF 1 FAMILY.
Auburn, Mass. - A tractor-trailer with faulty brakes plowed into a car stopped on the side of a highway, setting the vehicle on fire and killing three young children and their grandparents. Three other relatives were injured.
The truck driver was charged with vehicular homicide.
The family had stopped along Interstate 290 late Saturday, with the rental car's hazard lights and headlights on, because one of the children was restless, police said.
"They were trying to calm the kid down before they continued on their way," state police Sgt. Barbara Bennett said Sunday.
Investigators didn't know why the truck was driving in the breakdown lane where the car was stopped. There were no skid marks, troopers said.
