Birdsville, MD Head On Automobile Crash, Aug 1957

FIVE KILLED, 3 HURT IN HEAD-ON CAR CRASH.

Birdsville, Md. (UP) - Five persons were killed and three critically injured in a head-on automobile crash today about 10 miles south of Annapolis.
The dead included:
MRS. CLEO SMITH, 35;
and her 14-year-old daughter, SHIRLEY, of Hyattsville, Md.;
and SANDRA COOK, 14, of Lanham, Md., all passengers in one car.
The other victims, among five Washington youths in the second vehicle, were RICHARD PRATTER, JR., 17;
and ROBERT OBERST, 16.
The injured Washington youths were:
RONALD HARRIS, 18;
CHARLES NOTTA, 19;
and FRANCIS BANDA, 16, who were treated initially at the Anne Arundel County General Hospital in Annapolis and later transferred to Georgetown Hospital.
Police said the crash occurred when MRS. SMITH attempted to pass another vehicle. Her southbound car smashed into the northbound car carrying the Washington youths.
