Choptank, MD Canning Packing Plant Fire, Aug 1909
The large canning and packing plant of Messrs. W. M. Wright and R. I. Lednum, trading as W. M. Wright & Co., at Choptank, with a capacity of 35,000 cases per season, was totally destroyed by fire about two o'clock on Wednesday morning, together with the entire contents, consisting largely of the recently purchased stock of cans, etc., valued at many thousands of dollars, and other costly property which was burned. The firm had contracted with the farmers for about two hundred acres of tomatoes and had started up the plant. The outlook was for a good season. County Commissioner William J. Wright, who resides at Choptank, was overcome by the heat while fighting the flames. The loss is estimated to be over $15,000 and is partially covered by insurance.
