FIRE RAZES BUILDING AT MAINE PREP SCHOOL.
Waterville, Maine, Feb. 22 -- (AP) Fire swept through 135-year-old Coburn Classical Institute's classroom building tonight destroying the three-story brick structure, scholastic records and equipment.
Headmaster RICHARD WOOSTER said facilities would cost $200,000 to $300,000 to replace.
WOOSTER said it may be possible to house the school's 12 resident students in the upper story of the dorm and conduct classes on the dorm's lower floors. Coburn's enrollment is about 100.
Most pupils live in their own homes in surrounding communities.
The school building housed the institution's library and an astronomical telescope as well as supplies and equipment. Alumni files were removed yesterday in preparation for a school development fund drive.
