Coffeyville, KS Natural Gas Explosion, May 1896

EXPLOSION OF NATURAL GAS.

ONE PERSON KILLED AND A NUMBER OF OTHERS BADLY INJURED.

Coffeyville, Kan., May 22. -- A gas explosion yesterday wrecked two 2-story brick buildings in the center of the city, causing the instant death of one man and the fatal injury of two persons and the wounding more or less seriously of 13 others.
The killed are:
DAVID CARTER, killed by falling walls.
Those fatally injured are:
MATT ATKINSON, colored.
ELIZA PURSELY, colored.
Those more or less seriously injured are:
DOT IRVING.
MAUDE YOUNG.
A. S. MAXWELL.
MRS. P. K. SMITH.
MRS. MORRIS.
KATE MORRIS, daughter of above.
LEON ESNOM.
JOHN WILSON.
JOE SHORT.
WILLIAM KIME.
WILLIAM STUCKEY.
Two others, names not given.
Several others were in the buildings, but escaped unhurt.
