Ossawatomie, KS Insane Asylum Fire, Mar 1880
AN INSANE ASYLUM BURNED.
Paola, Kan., March 8. -- The main building of the State Asylum at Ossawatomie took fire this evening about 5 o'clock, and was completely destroyed. The fire was first discovered in the centre of the building, and spread to other portions. The damage is estimated at $40,000. The wings were saved by great effort. The officers and employes acted coolly, and by their efforts no lives were lost and the inmates were prevented from escaping. Several persons were slightly injured in fighting the flames. The fire is now under complete control. Great excitement prevails in the surrounding towns. Every available team was put in service, loaded with people and sent forward in haste to render all the assistance in their power, it being known that the institution contained about 300 inmates.
