Lansing, IA Boating Accident, Sep 1912

BOAT AND LAUNCH COLLIDE.

MOTHER AND THREE CHILDREN PERISH BY DROWNING.

Lansing, Ia., Sept. 4. -- MRS. FRANK LANKFORD, and her three children, JOHN, twenty-one; MABEL, twelve; and FRANCIS, four-years-old, were drowned three miles below here when a boat in which they were riding was upset in a collision with a gasoline launch, driven by a younger son.
JOHN LANKFORD, the eldest son, who was the only member of the party able to swim, made a valiant effort to save the lives of his mother and brother and sister, but drowned in the attempt.
He managed to keep the members of the party above water for nearly half an hour, but finally became exhausted from his struggle and sank.
The son in the motor boat was too young to give assistance.
