Conrad, IA Town Fire, Sep 1894

CONRAD SCORCHED.

Gladbrook, Ia. -- The little town of Conrad, in Grundy County, nine miles west of Gladbrook, was nearly destroyed by fire yesterday morning. The fire was discovered at 2 o'clock in the rear part of Tapp's grocery store and had got such a start as to be beyond control. The town has no fire protection and water being very scarce the town soon went up in smoke.
Two business blocks were burned. The following are the principal losers:
STARK Bros., general store, loss about $20,000.
Bank, $500.
TAPP'S grocery and harness store, $3,000.
DR. PENFIELD'S office and books, $500.
BAIRD & SCHROEDER, meat market, $500.
WHEELER'S drugs, $5,000.
FRAZER & LIEBESTE, groceries and hardware, $3,000.
MOORE Bros., barber shop, $200.
FIELD'S saloon, $500.
BAXTER'S barber shop, $500.
VANDERFORD'S wagon and blacksmith shop, $300.
Several citizens lost on household goods so that it is thought that the loss will exceed $50,000. The Tama City fire company was called for and responded very quickly, but the fire was under control before they reached there. The loss falls very heavy on all as there was very little insurance.
