Wellsburg, IA Natural Gas Explosion, Feb 1885

BLOWN UP.

Wellsburg, Ia., Feb. 21. -- A terrific explosion of natural gas occurred in a two-story brick building occupied by HEASLEY Bros., cigar makers, at half past one o'clock this morning. The building together with the adjoining property was demolished. Six persons are reported killed.
The force of the explosion shook the surrounding buildings severely. The inhabitants ran terrified in all directions. The debris at the scene of the explosion took fire and spread rapidly to the adjoining buildings. The fire was confined to the building in which the explosion occurred and the two adjoining buildings. The whole family of MR. HEASLEY, consisting of himself, wife, mother and two children were instantly killed. JOHN WALTERS is missing, and it is supposed is among the ruins. WALTER'S wife and two children are badly injured.
