Shellsburg, IA Train Derailment, Mar 1910
Shellsburg, Ia., March 22. -- Through somebody's carelessness, a switch was left open at Shellsburg yesterday morning. As a result, a southbound train went into the ditch, and one brakeman was killed and a number of persons hurt.
This wreck so blockaded the track that the northbound trains, the combined 19 and 21, were sent around by way of Marshalltown. A few miles out of that city, the train piled up in a wreck, and half a hundred lives were snuffed out.
Thus two disastrous and costly wrecks were the direct result of the open switch at Shellsburg.
