Fulton, IN Auto Crashes Into Pole, Sep 1955

INDIANA CRASH TAKES 5 LIVES.

2 OTHERS HURT NEAR FULTON; CAR HITS POLE.

Fulton, Ind. (AP) - Five persons were killed and two were critically injured Sunday when an auto veered out of control and struck an electric utility pole three miles south of this north central Indiana town.
The dead, all of whom lived in South Bend, Ind., some 45 miles to the north, were:
RAY C. WITTENBURG, 60;
his son, ARTHUR RAY, 17;
his grandson, JUEL STARKWEATHER;
and his two grand-daughters, CHARLENE STARKWEATHER, 10, and HELEN LUCILLE STARKWEATHER, 11.
Those critically injured Wittenburg's daughter, MRS. EVELYN STARKWEATHER, mother of Juel, Charlene and Helen, and another of her sons, RAY, 13.
State police reported that the impact cut the car in half and threw the front half about 40 feet from the rear.
The group had started out two hours before the crash for a Labor Day weekend jaunt.
The victims, all members of one family, were en route to a family reunion, state police said.
Mrs. Starkweather was a daughter of the elder Wittenburg.
