Lincoln, IL Downtown Destructive Fire, Feb 1932
AGED COUPLE BURNED TO DEATH IN LINCOLN FIRE.
Lincoln, Ill., Feb. 23. -- An aged couple was burned to death and damage estimated at $200,000 caused by a fire of undetermined origin which destroyed five store buildings here early today. The blaze was discovered shortly after 1 a. m. and it was necessary to call firemen from Bloomington and Springfield to help bring it under control. The cause of the fire has not been determined.
The dead are JACOB VAN DEVENTER, whose body has not been recovered from the debris, and his wife MRS. NORA VAN DEVENTER, who was seriously burned and then fatally injured when she slipped from the arms of a fireman as he attemped to descent a long step ladder with her. MRS. VAN DEVENTER died a few minutes later in a local hospital.
