Chicago, IL Western Union Building Collapse, May 1893

Four Men Injured.

CHICAGO, May 24.---While a number of men were tearing down the old Western Union building at the corner of La Salle and Washington streets, a chute in which bricks, mortar and other debris was being sent to the basement, gave way carrying with it the flooring and timbers of the first story and hurling the entire mass on the men beneath. Four men were buried in the debris, all of whom were more or less cut and bruised. The most seriously injured is Frank McDonald, whose leg was broken. Fortunately the height of the fall was not great otherwise, not one of the men would have escaped alive.
