SIX PERSONS DIE IN STATE ROAD CRASH.
Mapleton, Ill. (AP) - A heavily-loaded truck which police said was swerving desperately to avoid an automobile, toppled on the auto Sunday and killing its six occupants.
The truck driver, Julius Green, 31, of Toledo, Ohio, was not seriously hurt.
The dead, all from Griggsville, Ill.:
CLYDE HENRY BENNETT, 48;
his wife, PAULINE, 47;
his brother, JUNIOR, 27;
Junior's wife, RUTH, 34;
the JUNIOR BENNETT'S son, FRED, 14;
and WILBUR DEAN SMITH, 17, a boy the JUNIOR BENNETT family recently adopted from the Chaddock Boys Home in Quincy.
State Police said JUNIOR BENNETT was driving the car. It took authorities almost an hour and a half to get the victims out of the wreck.
Green told the state police that the automobile, swerving on and off U.S. Highway 24 a mile south of Mapleton, came at him and that he tried to avoid it. However, he said his truck, loaded with frozen fish, overturned directly on the car.
