Waterloo, IL Head On Collision Kills Five, Aug 1956
5 KILLED, ONE HURT IN WATERLOO CRASH.
Waterloo, Ill., Aug. 11 (AP) - Three Missourians and two Illinois residents went to their deaths today in the head-on crash of two cars near here. Another person was listed as critical.
Police identified the dead in the noon-day collision as:
ALVIN E. CHOATE, 31, of Chester, Ill.;
MRS. ETHEL L. HENSLEY, about 55, of Lawrenceville, Ill;
H. C. TRAVIS, 55;
EMMA L. TRAVIS, about 60;
and GLADYS TRAVIS, 46, all of Fornfelt, Mo.
The police report said that CHOATE, driving south by himself, apparently lost control on a steep turn and veered across the highway into the other lane.
In critical condition at a hospital in Red Bud, Ill., was BETTY HENSLEY, 16, of Lawrenceville.
The accident on State Highway 3, about six miles south of here, jammed up both north and south-bound traffic over an hour as police worked to clear the wreckage.
Waterloo is about 25 miles south of St. Louis in Monroe County.
