Union Pier (Chicago) IL, Youth Drowns, Aug 1956

Union Pier, Aug. 20 - State police, sheriff's officers and the coast guard were to resume their search today for the body of 18-year-old EDWARD SEELENTAG, of Chicago, who drowned in Lake Michigan yesterday morning at Union Pier.
The drowning occurred at 11 a.m. yesterday in front of the beach cottage of J.J. Collins whom the victim and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Seelentag, were visiting.
William Gazaree, of Chicago, who was swimming with the youth at the time, told state police they were both swept out into the lake by the strong undertow. Gazaree said he had hold of the victim on two occasions but young SEELENTAG slipped from his grasp.
Gazaree was helped from the water by other swimmers on the beach, but they were unable to get to SEELENTAG who went down in approximately eight foot of water 60 feet from shore.
Choppy water yesterday foiled attempts by the coast guard and police to recover the youth's body.
