St. Charles - A 56-year-old Chicago man died Wednesday when his truck slammed into a tree in St. Charles, authorities said.
The heavy cargo in the back of the truck shifted forward on impact, crushing the driver, Kane County Coroner Chuck West said.
The one-vehicle accident happened about 2:15 p.m. on Route 31, just south of Crane Road near the Ferson Creek Forest Preserve.
Authorities did not immediately release the victim's name, pending notification of family.
Route 31 was shut down near the crash site for more than two hours while authorities investigated.
At the scene, St. Charles police Sgt. Don Shaw said the man was going south on Route 31 the 1999 Chevrolet truck he was driving left the road, climbed a snowy embankment and struck a tree.
The driver may have swerved to avoid traffic stopped on Route 31, West said. He was the only person in the truck.
An autopsy might not be conducted because of the severity of the man's injuries, West said. The accident remained under investigation Wednesday night.
