Mine Buildings Burned

The engine house and entire upper works of CHARLES HORTMAN’s coal mine, on Illinois street, just north of the limits of Belleville, Ill., were destroyed by fire. The origin of the fire is unknown. Loss $3,500, partially covered by insurance. The firemen were handicapped by a deficient water supply. The mine employs thirty-five men and the works were maintained to supply coal for the Crescent Nail Mill in close proximity. The mine was established thirty years ago.
