Belleville, IL Coal Mine Fire, Oct 1901
Mine Buildings Burned
The engine house and entire upper works of CHARLES HORTMANâ€™s coal mine, on Illinois street, just north of the limits of Belleville, Ill., were destroyed by fire. The origin of the fire is unknown. Loss $3,500, partially covered by insurance. The firemen were handicapped by a deficient water supply. The mine employs thirty-five men and the works were maintained to supply coal for the Crescent Nail Mill in close proximity. The mine was established thirty years ago.
