FIRE AT CLINTON MONDAY
Hammond & Ely Store Damaged to the Amount of $2000
Clinton, June 1--Special to the Herald-- Fire started this morning at 10:15 in the rear of the Hammond & Ely grocery store on the east side of the square. The fire started in the basement and worked its way up to the roof through a passageway back of the first floor stair steps. After nearly an hour the fire was extinguished. The smoke was intense.
The stock of Hammond & Ely is seriously damaged with smoke and water. The stock
on the ground floor was literally soaked. The firm carried $2000 insurance with F. J. Lewis. The building is owned by Mrs. E. L. Magill. The damage to the building is not great. The stock of M. Sturm, the clothier, on the south of the grocery was slightly damaged.
