BIG FIRE IN CHICAGO
CHICAGO, Oct. 8-- A fire this morning drove scores of people from their homes and destroyed the plant of the McMahan Biscuit and Cracker company and the stables of the Hoffman Brewing company. There were no casualties, but the loss will reach a quarter million of dollars.

Fire early today destroyed the McMahon Cracker and Biscuit company's factory at 650 Green street, causing a loss of $150,000; damaged Brewer & Hoffman's building, adjoining, to the extent of $30,000 and drove guests of several hotels nearby into the street in their night clothes. The flames started in the bakery an [sic] within five minutes the whole structure was ablaze. Twenty-seven roomers in a lodging house at 524 Green street escaped. They had been aroused by a fierce fight between two lodgers, and, seeing the fire, rushed into the street a few minutes before the south wall of the factory toppled over, crushing in the roof of their dwelling place.
