Carroll County, IL Tornado, Oct 1872
Oct. 4, 1872: On Tuesday evening of last week a tornado passed over the western portion of Woodland township doing considerable damage. The house of William Summerville on Plum River was taken up bodily and carried about 40 feet turning it completely over and striking on the roof as it fell. The roof and upper floor were carried two or three rods after it struck, and the lower floor a distance of 10 rods. The house was completely demolished and the furniture was broken into fragments. The cooking stove was thrown a distance of two rods in the opposite direction showing the whirling force of the storm. Three women who were in the house were gently landed on the ground unhurt. Trees, fences, corn, crops, etc. were laid flat on the ground in the storm’s path.
