SIU Freshman Boy Drowns

CARBONDALE, Ill. AP--An 18-year-old college freshman drowned Sunday when he plunged over a dam into a rocky creek bed.

The victim was Bob Barc of East St. Louis, a student at Southern Illinois University.

Jackson county sheriff's officers said Barc was wading or swimming near the dam at the outlet of Crab Orchard Lake, about seven miles southeast of here, when the swift water pushed him over.

He fell about 20 feet to the boulder-strewn bed of Crab Orchard Creek. His body was recovered several hours later.
