Ocala, FL Two Car Collision Kills Five, Aug 1959


Ocala, Fla. (AP) - It was raining lightly and the asphalt pavement was slippery when the car ran off the right side. The driver pulled back on the road, shot across into the other traffic lane and there was a loud crash.
Five lives were snuffed out in the accident Wednesday on U.S. 441 about 12 miles south of here. Two other persons were seriously hurt.
Three members of the MURRAY COHEN family, en route home to New York City, after visiting COHEN'S father in Miami Beach, were killed - COHEN, 42; his wife SHIRLEY, 37, and their son RICHARD 4. A daughter, ELAINE, 10, was critically hurt.
In the other car, SAM JONES HILLIARD, 56, of South Miami, was killed instantly. His daughter, MRS. PATRICIA HILLIARD COVINGTON, 21, recent graduate of Lenoir Rhyne College, Hickory, N.C., died later in an Ocala hospital. HILLARD'S wife, MARY, about 45, was seriously hurt.
A Florida Highway Patrolman said the northbound COHEN car ran off the road and in getting back crossed into the southbound traffic lane. Both cars were thrown backward by the impact.
