Phoenix Pants Shirt & Overall Company Fire

PHILADELPHIA’S $75,000 FIRE
Overall Factory Burns; All Employees Escape But
One Man.
PHILADELPHIA, Feb 12 – A fire in which one
man lost his life and several others had narrow
escapes from death today damaged the five-story
building at [illegible] South Third street, in
the heart of the financial district. The
building was occupied by the Phoenix Pants Shirt
and Overall Company, and
Dumee Sons & Co
cotton brokers.
The flames started in the upper portion of the
building occupied by the Phoenix company and cut
off escape by means of the stairway of the
employees working on the top floor, forcing them
to use the fire escapes, which were covered with
ice and snow. With one exception all of the two
score of employees among whom were a dozen girls
safely reached an adjoining building. The one
who failed was LOUIS
DESKEVESKEY aged 26, who jumped or
fell from the escape and was instantly killed.
Several employes [sic] were injured but not
seriously. The damage is estimated at $75,000.

The one who failed was
LOUIS DESKEVSKEY, aged twenty-six
years, who, in the excitement, either jumped or
fell from the fire escape. He was instantly
killed.
