GREAT FIRE AT NOME

Heart of Business Section of Alaska City Burned

THE NEWS IS DELAYED

Although Infarmation [sic] of the Conflagration Is Vague, It Is Feared That the Damage May Reach a Half Million Dollars.

SEATTLE, Wash., Sept. 18.
– Dispatches received in Seattle tell of a disastrous fire that swept the heart of the business section of Nome, Alaska, on the night of September 12. From the meager information given it is believed that twenty-five buildings were destroyed in the vicinity of Lane’s Way and that the fire covered two or three blocks. No details are given and no loss of life is reported.

If the fire burned in both directions from Lane’s Way it is estimated by Seattle persons familiar with the class of business houses in that vicinity that the loss will reach $5000,000, and may exceed that figure, though any estimate made at present would be a mere guess.

Cable and telegraphic communication were re-established to Nome last evening after and interruption of five days, but details of the fire are still lacking.
