Emigrant Gap, CA Greyhound Bus And Truck Crash, May 1961


Emigrant Gap, Calif. (AP) - Four persons were killed and more than 30 injured, two critically, when a Greyhound Bus collided with a truck Thursday in this Sierra community 90 miles east of Sacramento, Calif.
The truck driver, RICHARD W. THORNBERG, 26, Auburn, Calif., died in the accident. His body was found 200 feet from the bus, which plunged off U.S. 40 and into some trees.
Also killed were JANE BOSWORTH REYNOLDS, 57, Oakland, Calif.; Pvt. JAMES F. DAGEL, 21, Watertown, S.D.; and Pvt. ANTHONY J. GAFFKE, 19, Bozeman, Mont. The privates were National Guard reservists en route to Ft. Ord, Calif.
Critically injured were ELIZABETH GLADNEY, 34, San Francisco, and OLGA WRIGHT, of Sacramento.
The bus driver, SEBASTIAN W. BUCHER, 50, of Concord, Calif., was listed in very serious condition.
