HIGHWAY CRASH KILLS 5 AFTER ANNUAL MOTORCYCLE GATHERING.
Willits, Calif. - (AP) - Five motorcyclists heading home from a bikers gathering died in a pileup that closed a two-lane stretch of a major highway for several hours.
The unidentified bikers were heading south on U.S. 101 about 1:20 p.m. Sunday when a pickup truck in the northbound lane rear-ended a Jeep Cherokee and sent it into oncoming traffic near this town 125 miles north of San Francisco.
Four motorcycles crashed into the Jeep. Four male bikers and a female passenger were killed. All were wearing helmets, the California Highway Patrol said.
Another biker was treated for moderate injuries and released.
The motorcyclists were among hundreds who converged near Piercy, in Northern California, for the annual Redwood Run gathering.
Earlier Sunday, three people were injured when three other motorcycles crashed on U.S. 101 about six miles south of Willits.
