Westmoreland, CA Nine Killed In Auto Collision, Apr 1962

NINE DIE IN WRECK ON CALIF. HIGHWAY.

Westmoreland, Calif. - (AP) - Two cars carrying farm workers crashed head on near the Salton Sea Sunday, killing nine persons - six of them members of the same family.
California Highway patrolmen said the accident occurred on a two-lane section of U.S. 99 in the lush agricultural Imperial Valley, seven miles west of Westmoreland.
Deputy Coroner Richard Ramirez identified the dead as JACOB URIAS, about 35; his wife, VICTORIA; and four of their children ranging in age from about 2 to 10 years. Ramirez was unable to identify the children.
Two other URIAS children were in critical condition.
Also killed in the station wagon driven by URIAS was FEDERICO GALLEGE MEDINA, about 20, a Mexican farm worker.
Killed in the other auto was JOSE PALOMO, about 40, the driver; and TOMAS NOVELO GONZALEZ, in his 30's.
