El Monte, CA Animal Trainer Killed, May 1935
ANIMAL TRAINER DIES OF WOUNDS.
ATTACK OF LIONS WHEN MAN STUMBLES IN CAGE PROVES FATAL.
Monterey Park, Cal., May 12 (AP) -- Victim of a vicious attack by lions he was training, HARMAN ZIEGLER, 45, died today at the Garfield Hospital of injuries received Thursday at a lion farm in El Monte, Cal.
ZIEGLER was set upon by 15 lions when he stumbled over a stool he was training the big animals to mount. He was clawed severely on the arms, head and neck. Attendants drove the lions away with whips and rescued him. Infection coupled with the deepness of the wounds proved fatal.
Charles Gay, proprietor of the farm, which breeds and trains the animals for motion picture and circus work, said the attack on ZIEGLER flamed into sudden fury when he stumbled and fell to the ground, inside the cage.
"He had the cats completely under control, and spaced at different points around the cage, there was no warning. They seemed no different than usual," Gay said.
"Suddenly, he tripped over something and fell. It was as though an explosion had occurred. ZIEGLER had hardly touched the ground before the whole bunch of them were in the air. A huge, black-maned cat led the pack."
